From 'Beyond Our Control' to major muralist

David Blodgett died Dec. 13 at the age of 74. As a muralist, he played a major role in the art around the city. Most recently, he painted the Riley High School mural on Miami Street. He had a hand in more than 200 murals all over the country. Many were painted with his fellow artist and wife, Linda Crimson. She died in 2017.

David was also known for designing the arrow logo for 'Beyond Our Control,' the student-produced Junior Achievement- sponsored media-satire program that aired on WNDU-TV from 1968 to 1986.

The show won national awards and was a stepping stone for many high school students. It produced several people who went on to bigger and better things in the arts, such as screenwriter Larry Karaszewski and actor Dean Norris.

Bob Soos is a DJ in Vero Beach, Fla. He got his start with 'Beyond Our Control.' “Dave was creative and funny way above the typical teenager. He was an artist at 17.”

Through the summer of 2023, David worked on the Riley mural and became a neighborhood attraction. The community brought him snacks and water. There were a lot of selfies.

Judith Overmyerwas the fundraiser for the Riley mural. She remarked that David was one of a kind. “So creative and funny. I remember him saying that he thought this was his last big mural.”

His daughter Lisa said her father tried to teach her to be an artist. In a way, he succeeded because she is an actor. He was funny and a delight to be around. “I was home-schooled. When it got to the hard lessons, he would ask if I wanted to watch the Three Stooges.”

Lisa said her father had many loves — animals, art and talking to people. “He loved his life and he wouldn’t have changed anything.”

Lisa said there will be a celebration of life in May. No date has been set. She asked friends to contact her or Palmer Funeral Home for information.

I knew Mike from Jackson HS and he became a dear friend at Purdue.  We must have played a thousand hands of euchre on second floor of Harrison Hall!  Around '85 he brought wife and kids to our house in sbn to swim.  We saw him and his dad many times at Bendix Woods during Sugar Camp Days, and all his family were happy and gracious.  I lost track for a while but got a wedding invitation from AZ and a picture of him and his motorcycle.  He brought joy to the world and we will never forget him.  Norm Chadwick jhs1969

Now I been out in the desert, just doin' my time
Searchin' through the dust, lookin' for a sign
If there's a light up ahead, well brother I don't know
But I got this fever burnin' in my soul
So let's take the good times as they go
And I'll meet you further on up the road

Michael Eugene Wilson, 66, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 18, 2019 at his home in Tucson, AZ with his wife KLynn Wilson and his dog Frankie by his side after battling chronic illnesses for several years.

Mike was born on July 4, 1952 in La Porte, IN to Eugene Freer and Jane (Barnhart) Wilson. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to South Bend, IN, where Eugene and his father Phelix Leotis Wilson started Wilson Fence Company. Mike also resided in Warsaw, IN and Huntington, IN before moving to Tucson in 2001.

Along with his wife, he is survived by his two children, Jeffrey (Krissy) Wilson and Lauren (Jedd) Smith and three grandchildren, Josie Lynn, Elizabeth Jane, and Henry Michael Wilson; his three step-children Amber Summers, Tiffany Navarette, and Josh Navarette, and ten step-grandchildren Josiah, Myalynn, Noah, Monroe, Mica, Seleste, Anessa, Lielea, Diesel, and Zylas. He is also survived by brothers, Mark (Nancy) Wilson of Elkhart, IN, Matt (Lou Anne) Wilson of South Bend, and sister Cheryl (Wilson) McAuley of Longview, WA, and uncle Dan (Grace) Wilson of Bellevue, NE, and multiple cousins, nieces and nephews. Mike’s parents, Eugene and Jane, preceded him in death.

Mike was a graduate of Culver Summer Academy, a 1970 graduate of Andrew Jackson High School, and then went on to graduate from Purdue University in 1974. While at Purdue, he served as president of his fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon. After graduating, he served in multiple sales and management roles with Dale Skinner & Associates Insurance Agency, Certanium Alloys, Premier, Mittler, and later at Sears, Roebuck and Company where he retired in 2013.

Mike was a member of Grace United Methodist Church while living in South Bend, and later First United Methodist Church in Warsaw, serving as a senior youth group leader and choir member. He served as Worshipful Master of Warsaw Lodge #73, F. & A.M. He sang in a barbershop quartet, enjoyed playing the guitar, had great taste in music, and was an avid reader. He had a keen interest in his family genealogy and shared his research with other family members. His sense of humor, cheerful disposition, and love will be missed by many.

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at Grace United Methodist Church in South Bend, where members of Warsaw Lodge #73, F. & A.M. will also conduct a Masonic memorial. Rev.
