Updated 20 August 2022 - Final Update

JHS Class of '72!

50th Class Reunion Close Out

The reunion happened a bit over two months ago; we've been enjoying the rest of the summer and thought it was time to wrap things up.

A good time was had by all who attended the reunion.  120 classmates and guests attended the party on Friday night.  Everyone enjoyed the venue, the food, and, most of all, the people.  It was great to catch up with friends we hadn't seen in a long time, learn about what they've been doing the last 50 years, and what they're doing now.

There was also a good turnout on Saturday by members of all classes for the tour of the former Jackson High School.  It was interesting to see how spaces have been converted and used in different ways.  School lunch is no longer made from scratch as it was when Jackson was a high school.  There are stations with different types of cuisines for students to choose.  I guess that means no more chocolate chip cookies and shakes like we used to have.  Those kids don't know what they're missing.

Some of the school is the same as it always was:  The gym, the auditorium, the stairwells, and the hallways.  It was good to see our old stomping grounds, but it was mostly a way to say goodbye.

There are almost 150 photos of the reunion and school tour posted on the South Bend Jackson web site (https://www.southbendjackson.com/class_index.cfm), run by the South Bend Alumni Association.  If you're not already signed up, sign up (it costs nothing and there are no ads or annoying nags).

If you have photos that you haven't already shared, send them to JHS_72_50th_Reunion@protonmail.com so that they can be added.  This email address will stay active until 23 June 2023, after which it will be taken down.  The account on the email service used to these emails will also be taken down; however, the email addresses will be preserved for whomever handles subsequent reunions.

Memory books have been selling well.  As of 19 August 2022, there are four (4) left.  If you're in South Bend and are willing to pick it up from Debbie Fisher Murray's house, the cost is $10.00.  Otherwise, the cost is $13.00, which includes postage.  Contact Debbie directly or via the email address above.  When they're sold out, they're gone.

In closing, many thanks to all who came and partied, and many, many thanks to all who made the reunion weekend possible.  Stay strong, healthy, and kind.
Go Tigers!  The JHS class of 1972 rocks!

JHS Class of '72!

Here's the latest update on the reunion.

A couple of last-minute reservations came in last week, so now 118 people plan to be there! Woo hoo! Thank you all for the great turnout!

98 of our classmates returned their questionnaires, so they'll be featured in the Memory Book. The final book went to the printer on Monday. 100 copies have been ordered, so there will be some extras for sale at the reunion, as well as after the reunion. Stay tuned for more information on how to order your copy following the reunion.

The golf outing is getting interest! In case you missed it, here's the message from Bob Grant and Wayne Sills about the outing:

To all JHS Class of 72 Golfers

Bob Grant and Wayne Sills are coordinating golf at Blackthorn Golf Club the day of the reunion. We are not contemplating any competition or prizes; just a casual round of golf; so if you leave your “A” game at home…. no worries.

Three tee times have been reserved beginning at 11:00 to provide time to play 18 and get ready for the 5:30 cocktail party at The Blue Heron.

Blackthorn has offered our group a $10.00 discount on green fees so the cost will be $67.00 per player for one of Northern Indiana’s top golf venues.

There are no shower facilities at Blackthorn so plan on ‘freshening up’ somewhere else between golf and dinner.

As a courtesy to the golf club we want to confirm the number of players with the golf club by June 10 so please contact Bob (bobgrant@hughes.net) or Wayne (waynesills72@gmail.com) ASAP to indicate your interest.

We're looking forward to a great reunion! It'll be great to reconnect with our classmates, especially those whom we haven't seen for 50 years!

Debbie Fisher Murray

Class of '72!

Tick! Tick! Tick! The clock is ticking -- only three days left to get your RSVP and questionnaire in!

June 1 is fast approaching. No time to waste to let us know you're coming!

So far, 100 people have signed up to attend the reunion. We're within striking distance of the 111 people needed to exceed the challenge from the Class of '71. They wagered we couldn't beat their number of 110 attendees. Bragging rights are on the line! Let's go, Class of '72! We can do it!

GREAT NEWS! Wayne Sills and Bob Grant have put together a golf outing on the afternoon of the reunion, June 24. Here's a message from them:

Class of '72!

Reminder - 10 days until the Reunion RSVP Deadline!

Wait. What? Last week it was 40 days until the deadline. What happened?

The answer is -- I made a mistake. I was counting down the days to the Reunion instead of the days to the RSVP deadline. Oops. 10 days is the correct number. That's the thing about computers - when you make a mistake, it can be seen by many people and you can make mistakes faster. My apologies. As I like to say, the nut behind the keyboard was loose.

Now that I'm done with the humble groveling....

It's getting down to the wire to get your RSVP and completed questionnaire returned. JUNE 1 2022 is the deadline. There are 79 people coming, so we're closing in on the challenge put to us by the JHS Class of '71. They had 110 people at their 50th anniversary reunion, so we need at least 111 people (yes, I got that number right) to beat them for bragging rights for which class had the better reunion. That's only another 32 people. We can do it!

Be sure to return your completed questionnaire even if you're not able to attend the reunion. We'd like to know how you're doing! Your info will be published in the Memory Book for posterity.

Speaking of the Memory Book, books will be available for purchase at the reunion for $10.00.

Be sure to bring your camera. The plan is to have a website where you can upload your photos and download as many photos as you'd like. An announcement will go out later, so stay tuned.

As always, send any questions to JHS_72_50th_Reunion@protonmail.com. If you haven't received the invitation sent via snail mail, let us know and we'll email the form to you. Print it out, enclose your check, and mail it. As long as it gets here by June 1, you're in. Let us know that you've mailed it so we know it's coming.

Debbie Fisher Murray

Class of 1972!

Reminder - 40 Days Until the Reunion Deadline!

Here's your weekly reminder (or nag, depending on your perspective) to send in your RSVP and completed questionnaire for the reunion on 24 June 2022. There are only 40 days left!

We need your RSVPs so we can give the caterer an accurate dinner count. It works like a wedding reception: We don't want to have too few meals, but we can't pay for meals for people who may or may not show up for dinner.

On the other hand, we will be selling Memory Books at the reunion. Depending on remaining inventory, we'll sell Memory Books after the reunion for delivery ($10.00 + shipping and handling). An announcement will be made.

The reunion is being held at The Blue Heron at Blackthorn, 5440 Nimtz Parkway, South Bend, IN 46628. That's on the north side of town, west of IND-933 (the old US 31N) and east of the US 31 Bypass (something new for those of us who haven't been back in a while).

Cocktails will be available at the cash bar beginning at 5:30 PM. The dinner buffet will begin at 6:30 PM. The cash bar will reopen at 7:30 PM until the reunion ends around 10:30 PM.

Several folks have inquired about lodging. There are always events going on at Notre Dame, so don't limit yourself to hotels in South Bend. Mishawaka has some new hotels that should be nice. Stay away from anything by the airport. Trust us on this.

So, get those RSVPs and completed questionnaires into the mail! The USPS is slow; we want to get the correct dinner count and the Memory Book to the printer by our deadline. Don't be left out!

Debbie Fisher Murray

Updated 8 May 2022

A Reminder - 47 Days Until the Reunion!

Be sure to send in your RSVP!

That's right!  47 short days from today to celebrate graduating from Andrew Jackson High School 50 years ago.  It's going to be a great reunion - food, music, atmosphere, and, best of all, our classmates!

So far, 63 people have RSVP'd and plan to be there. We need at least 48 more to beat the challenge from Class of '71 to exceed their attendance number of 110 people.  We can do it!

Forty-six classmates have returned their questionnaire.  Don't be left out of the party or the Memory Book.  RSVP now!

JHS '72 GRADS -- 1 MONTH AND COUNTING!!

It's May 1st and your RSVPs are due by JUNE 1!! Send them in now, even if you only fill out the memory book questionnaire!

We're doing well in the challenge given to us by the Class of '71. They challenged us to exceed the 110 people at their 50th year reunion held last October. The Class of '72 has 54 people signed up with a month to go! We can do it! Bragging rights are at stake!

If you haven't received your invitation by now, let us know at JHS_72_50th_Reunion@protonmail.com.  Be sure to include your email address as that will be the quickest way to get the invitation to you now. Print it out, fill it in, and send it with your check to the address on the invitation.  You can also download the invitation and questionnaire here.

Preparations are going well. The music is set, the menu is great, the cash bar will be available, and the decorations will be outstanding! All we need is you!

Updated 10 April 2022

The JHS Class of '71 has Challenged the Class of '72 to Have the Best 50th Reunion

The Class of '71 had their 50th anniversary reunion last year; 110 people attended. It was a huge success! They have challenged the Class of '72 to exceed their attendee count for bragging rights to which class had a better reunion.

To the Class of '71: We accept your challenge!

To the Class of '72: We have been served!

It's up to us to show those guys that the JHS Class of '72 ROCKS when it comes to getting our classmates together to reacquaint ourselves, renew friendships, make new friendships, and have a great time.

If you haven't sent in your RSVP and questionnaire, DON'T WAIT! Do it now! As of April 9, we have 32 people signed up to come to the reunion. We need an additional 80+ people to show the Class of '71 that we know how to celebrate our JHS legacy.

RSVPs and completed questionnaires are due by June 1, 2022. Don't wait to the last minute; the USPS has been slow in delivering the invitations, so it's likely the same will happen to the RSVPs.

If you haven't received your invitation via US Mail, send an email to JHS_72_50th_Reunion@protonmail.com and we'll send you a replacement.

You can also download the invitation and questionnaire here.

We look forward to seeing you in June!

ATTENTION JHS CLASS OF 1972!

50TH REUNION UPDATE -- 3 APRIL 2022

It's been a little over three weeks since the invitations were sent out. So far, 25 people have said they're coming to this great event. The memory books are popular, with virtually every classmate ordering one.

We'd like to have at least 100 people at the reunion; 100 classmates and their spouses or significant others would be even better! Let's make this an event for the ages!

If you've received your invitation and questionnaire, please send them back right away so that we have an accurate count to give the venue and caterer. We need your information ahead of time as we won't be able to accommodate walk-ins. We also have to give the printer some lead time to publish the memory book.

If you haven't received a letter in the US Mail, send an email to JHS_72_50th_Reunion@protonmail.com with your correct mailing address, phone number(s), and email address, so that we can send you a replacement.

Thanks for your prompt attention to this request. It's been 50 years since we've seen one another. It will be epic!

Debra Fisher Murray

ATTENTION JHS CLASS OF '72!

The invitations to the 50th anniversary of our high school graduation have gone out!  Look for them in your snail mailbox soon.  We ask that you clip and return the bottom of the invitation with your payment, as well as the questionnaire on the second page.  These items will reserve a place for you and your guest, as well as an entry in the Memory Book.

What's that?  A memory book?  Yes, you have the opportunity to own a custom, limited edition, printed and bound memory book.  The book has selected photos and information from Jackson's past and our classmates.  We honor our deceased classmates and, by returning the questionnaire, we catch up on where our living classmates are and how they're doing.  But the memory book alone is not a substitute for being at the reunion.

The reunion will be held on Friday, 24 June 2022 at The Blue Heron at Blackthorn, 5440 W. Nimtz Parkway, South Bend, IN 46628.

Pre-dinner cocktails (cash bar) will start at 5:30 PM and end at 6:30 PM.  A buffet featuring Prime Rib, Sherry Chicken, House Salad, Green Beans w/ Bacon & Onions, Wild Rice Pilaf, and Roasted Redskins w/ Peppers & Garlic. Dessert consisting of cheesecake will be served following dinner.

The Blue Heron's inside ballroom and exterior patio (with cash bar) will be ours until 11:00 PM (if we can stay up that late) for mingling, reacquainting ourselves, and making new friends.  Music from 1968 to 1972 will play in the background the entire time.

Per person cost is $40.00.  The Memory Book is an additional $10.00 per copy.  Sorry, copies must be picked up at the reunion, shipping is not available at this time.

BONUS!  The former Jackson High School will be open for self-guided tours on Saturday, 25 June 2022, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, 5001 Miami Road, South Bend, IN 46614.  Members of all Jackson classes are invited to tour the school with us.  Find your old homeroom and locker!  See how the school has changed or what's stayed the same!

It's important that you return your RSVP and questionnaire as quickly as possible so that we can tell the Blue Heron how many will be attending and get the questionnaires to the printer.  Instructions for completing the RSVP and the questionnaire are in the letter.

DEADLINE FOR RETURNING YOUR RSVP AND QUESTIONNAIRE IS JUNE 1, 2022.

If you're reading this and don't receive the letter in the USPS mail, email us at

   JHS_72_50th_Reunion@protonmail.com

so that we can get it to you via email.  The USPS is slowing deliveries so it's important to return your RSVP and completed questionnaire as soon as possible.

The organizing committee is hoping that this will be the best reunion ever!  We'd like to see as many classmates there as possible.  See you in June!

Debra Fisher Murray

Below is a message from PJ Lavelle

What Jackson Class of ’72 Reunion wouldn’t be complete without a party at Moore’s?!

Chris & Faith have graciously provided their home to celebrate our 50 years of graduating from JHS. The setting will be festive and casual. Very casual. Provided at this outdoor fest will be yard games, BBQ grilling with a menu ranging from hot dogs, brats, burgers, possibly chicken, and veggie burgers, and side dishes. Should any of our local classmates like to bring a homemade side dish, you’re more than welcome.  An assortment of beverages [including water, soda, & beer [although it wouldn’t be a bad idea to BYOB and add to the coolers for everyone to share].  Parking in the fields [assuming it doesn’t rain].  There’s the pool [just bring your suit & towel], chairs, tables, condiments, utensils, napkins, tents, and the inside of the garage/barn.

Donations will be appreciated.

Date:          Saturday, June 25th
Time:          Start any time after 1:00 pm [until?]

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
HERE'S THE LATEST UPDATE ON THE REUNION

2 Jan 2022

Planning continues for this year's event.  Yes, THIS year.  We're 5½ months away from celebrating the 50th anniversary of our graduation from Jackson High School.  Hard to believe.

For those who have missed previous updates, the reunion is scheduled for 24 June 2022 (time TBD), we have a venue (The Blue Heron at Blackthorn in South Bend | www.blueheronevents.com), music, and menu.  We're trying to get as many of our classmates as possible to attend.  You've received this email because we found you!

We continue to search for classmates' contact information.  Greg Landry has joined the search; he's found 26 out of 38 people.  Kudos, and thanks, to Greg.  If anyone else would like to help, send an email to JHS_72_50th_Reunion@protonmail.com

The coffers for the reunion are less dry than they were in November.  We've received $230.00 in donations from our classmates - THANK YOU!

We're still far from reaching our $1000.00 goal necessary to keep the per-person cost of the reunion under $50.00.  We need 39 people to donate $20.00 apiece to help defray our costs.

As previously mentioned, if we can get 50 people to donate at least $20.00 each, that $1,000.00 will help keep ticket prices at around $40.00 per person.  If we can get donations totaling $1500.00, ticket prices can be less than $40.00 per person.  The Class of '71 was able to raise $4,000.00 in donations for their recent reunion!  The challenge has been laid out for us!

A bank account has been set up at Notre Dame Credit Union in South Bend. Debbie Fisher Murray and Jan Gutknecht Mitchell are the account owners.  If you'd like to make a donation, please make your check out either to Jan or Debbie and send it to one of them:

Debbie Murray
19577 Dice Street
South Bend, IN  46614

or

Jan Mitchell
53386 Winterberry Court

Thank you for your generosity!

Until next time!

Hey, JHS Class of ’72! Reunion Update! - 5 Nov 2021

Planning is well under way for the 50th anniversary celebration of our graduation from Jackson High School.  We've secured a venue, have found many of our classmates, and have started sending out notices to get people excited about attending next year's event.

It's that time now - asking for donations to help us make the event a reality. The coffers are dry - we've learned that the JHS bank account used for past reunions ran dry and was closed.  We have upcoming expenses for the venue, menu, mailings (not everyone is online), etc., so we'll be in need of cash to close things out.

We'd also like to keep the per-person cost below $50.00, if possible.  One way to do that is to be prudent in our costs*; another way is to solicit donations to help defray the costs that we will incur.

If we can get 50 people to donate at least $20.00 each, that $1,000.00 will help keep ticket prices at around $40.00 per person.  If we can get donations totaling $1500.00, ticket prices can be less than $40.00 per person.  The Class of '71 was able to raise $4000.00 in donations for their recent reunion!

An account has been set up at Notre Dame Credit Union in South Bend. Debbie Fisher Murray and Jan Gutknecht Mitchell are the account owners.  If you'd like to make a donation, please make your check out to either Jan or Debbie and send it to one of them:

Debbie Murray
19577 Dice Street
South Bend, IN  46614

or

Jan Mitchell
53386 Winterberry Court
South Bend, IN  46637

We appreciate your generosity and thank you on behalf of all of our classmates.

* For example, having the reunion on a Friday night reduced the cost of the venue from $11,000 to $1,000!

Hey, JHS Class of ’72! Reunion Update! - 11 Sep 2021

Next year, we’ll be “Reelin’ in the Years!” Yep, that’s the theme for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of our high school graduation. This Steely Dan song is from their 1972 album, ‘Can't Buy a Thrill.’ It reached Number 11 in the Billboard Hot 100 chart and Number 7 in the Cashbox Top 100, but it’ll be number one for us next year!

Your planning committee has been working diligently to find all of our classmates. We’ve verified the contact information for 154 of 340 classmates, and, sadly, that 39 of our classmates have passed since we graduated. We still need to find 147 of our classmates. This is where you can help.

Below are two lists: those people whose contact information we cannot verify and those for whom we have no contact information. We need your help to fill in the blanks. We’re specifically looking for:

  • Street Address
  • City
  • State
  • ZIP Code
  • Phone number(s)
  • Email address

The email address is particularly important, as we expect to do most communications electronically to help keep costs down.

If you’re able to help us, please send the information to

JHS_72_50TH_REUNION@PROTONMAIL.COM

That’s our secure email address hosted in Switzerland (seriously!). We appreciate your help in making this the best reunion yet!

JHS Class of 1972 – SAVE THE DATE!

We now have a venue! The Blue Heron at Blackthorn has been reserved for FRIDAY, JUNE 24, 2022 for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of graduation from Jackson High School.

From the Blue Heron’s website https://www.blueheronevents.com/:

“[The Blue Heron is] an event center which provides a full range of social, and business catering services in a beautiful natural setting, overlooking one of the area's loveliest golf courses. The venue occupies a colonial cape cod building especially designed for its unique needs. The space provides an airy country club ambiance featuring large open vistas overlooking two of the prettiest golf holes in Michiana.”

Why a Friday? Easy – it’s waaay cheaper than a Saturday! This will help keep costs down, while still having access to a ballroom and a patio for indoor and outdoor access. If the weather is inclement, the patio is covered, so we can still be outdoors. There’s parking for 300 cars and the facilities are ADA compliant.

Menu planning is next – we’re thinking that a buffet is the best way to go. We’ll try to accommodate dietary restrictions and preferences to the best of our ability; at our age, we can’t always eat the things we used to, at least not without repercussions. Maybe we’ll even have a Metamucil bar.

The committee is gathering contact information for our classmates – mailing addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses to make sure everyone from our class knows that they are invited. We’ll send updates via email to accommodate those who aren’t on Facebook. Send your contact information to JHS_72_50th_Reunion@protonmail.com to make sure you’re in the loop.

We want this reunion to be the best one yet, so make sure it’s on your calendar. Look for future updates on Facebook and your email inbox (after we get your email address).

Hey, JHS Class of ’72!

Planning for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of our high school graduation has begun! A committee has begun researching venues, menus, and other details that will make this reunion the best event in recent memory!

We have already pinned down the following reunion details:

  • The reunion will be held in South Bend in 2022 (duh!).

  • The event will be held at an indoor venue.

  • In recognition of our advancing chronological (but not necessarily emotional and intellectual!) age, we’re looking for venues that are climate controlled, ADA accessible, and comfortable.

  • Since some of us may have dietary restrictions, we’re planning the menu accordingly.

  • The committee is considering dates in the fall and spring of 2022, as well as summer dates (venue availability will play a large role in coming up with a final date).

The committee is proposing that this be our grandest, yet final, official class reunion. As such, we’d like to see the best turnout EVER for a JHS Class of ’72 reunion.

Our goal is to make classmates from around the country (and the world?) WANT to come to this grand event since it could very well be the last time that all of us will officially gather in one place.

If you’re reading this on Facebook, this group will be the place for announcements, updates, and other details. We’ll also be sending email updates to reach those classmates who are not on Facebook, so make sure that we have your email address! Let other classmates know that we need theirs’ as well.

Send updates to JHS_72_50th_Reunion@protonmail.com; feel free to pass this email address to our classmates.

Stay tuned to this group and your email inbox for more information as it becomes available!
